If you’ve been hurt or lost a loved one in an Ohio car accident, it is important that you know how to get a copy of your official Ohio Crash Report. These reports are often key evidence to support injury claims. They determine accident fault and, therefore, have a big impact on your compensation.

Crash reports are written by the responding officer. The document summarizes an officer’s accident investigation. It includes details like crash factors, injuries, and vehicle damage.

Reports by agencies throughout the state are maintained by the Ohio Department of Public Safety (DPS) with online access through the Ohio Crash System (OCS). Local agencies may also provide copies of reports they produce. Copies cost about $4 and are usually available 5-10 days after an accident. Access to crash photography is also available.

Getting a copy of your Ohio Crash Report hasn't always been simple. Typically, there are forms to fill out, fees to pay, limited windows of access, and, in some instances, long waits. However, you can skip the inconvenience and look up your report here.

If you want to go through the state to get a copy of your crash report, here’s how: Search the online DPS system by crash number, county, date, or the names of people involved. Register and pay the copy fee. Once the credit card payment goes through, your report will be viewable to you for 72 hours. To view and download photos, you will use a link emailed to you about 24-48 hours after payment is processed. The link typically expires in 14 days. The state crash system also accepts written requests for copies by mail, email, and fax. Make requests to OSHP Central Records.

Getting a copy of your Ohio Crash Report can be a hassle. If you have an Ohio car accident attorney, they can get a copy of the report for you.
